The classic Google Assistant on Android phones and tablets, a decade-old voice assistant that once ran on hundreds of millions of devices. After its planned end-of-2025 retirement slipped into 2026, Google emailed users in August that Assistant was 'going away on mobile devices' and began removing it on September 4, 2026, a rollout of several weeks that also took it off Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto. There is no switching back. Cars with Google built-in, Google TV and Home speakers and displays kept Assistant for now.
Collateral damage: Years of voice command customizations, routines, and smart home configurations needed to be rebuilt in Gemini.
