Launched alongside Meta Superintelligence Labs' Muse Image generator on July 7, 2026, it let you @-mention a public Instagram account in Meta AI and generate images of that person, pitched for birthday cards and group-trip memes. It was on by default: account owners were never notified, and the only protection was an opt-out in Instagram's settings. Users and talent agencies including CAA pushed back, and critics pointed to the obvious non-consensual imagery risk. Three days later Meta posted a brief update to its announcement: 'this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available.'
Collateral damage: Muse Image itself stayed live; only the ability to generate images of other people's public accounts was removed.
