Perplexity's search-grounded chat-completions API, launched January 21, 2025 with Sonar and Sonar Pro and later joined by sonar-reasoning-pro and sonar-deep-research. Support ended September 27, 2026, when the Agent API became the main surface. Synchronous and streaming calls are being quietly rewritten as Agent API presets (sonar and sonar-pro become 'fast', reasoning-pro 'low', deep-research 'high'); asynchronous requests are simply no longer supported. Some developers on migrated accounts reported HTTP 403 'agent_api_migration_required' errors from the old endpoint. The Sonar model lives on inside the Agent API; the API that carried its name does not.
