Retired exactly one year to the day after release — the model ID carries its own birthday, claude-opus-4-1-20250805. Anthropic gave 61 days' notice, one day above its stated 60-day minimum. It was the second flagship retirement in under two months after Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 both died June 15. Anthropic's own deprecation page concedes that retirement means researchers lose access for comparative studies and that it 'introduces safety- and model welfare-related risks.'
