Microsoft's first in-house image models did not get long. MAI-Image-2 (February 20) and MAI-Image-2e (April 9) were retired from Azure Foundry on August 15, 2026 — 176 and 128 days after release — in favour of MAI-Image-2.5 and 2.5-Flash. The successors are still in preview and already carry their own retirement date of October 1. Microsoft is now deprecating image models faster than most companies ship them.
