chatgpt-4o-latest, the API alias that tracked whichever GPT-4o ChatGPT was running, was removed from the API on February 17, 2026, four days after GPT-4o left ChatGPT; OpenAI pointed developers to gpt-5.1-chat-latest. The dated snapshots outlived it: gpt-4o-2024-05-13 is scheduled for October 23, 2026 and gpt-4o-2024-08-06 has no OpenAI shutdown date at all. GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and o4-mini left ChatGPT in the same wave but stayed in the API. 4o became the most-mourned model in AI history, with users petitioning for its return.
